Who is IELTS (International English Language Testing System) for?

If you are planning to emigrate or to enrol in a university course in England, Australia, New Zealand or Canada, the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) will allow you to know your level of English and to satisfy the required conditions.

The two versions of the test:

Academic version: required if you are planning to enrol at a foreign university.
General version: ideal if you plan to immigrate, to undertake non-university education overseas or if you are going to work overseas.

What does IELTS (International English Language Testing System) involve?

IELTS has four parts:

1. Listening:
The IELTS listening test lasts about 40 minutes and has 40 questions.
The first two parts deal with questions concerning society and the last two parts are based on education or training problems.
The text is recorded on a cassette that you can only listen to once.

2. Reading comprehension:
The IELTS reading comprehension test lasts 60 minutes and has 40 questions.
This test is divided into three parts of increasing difficulty, the number of words ranging from 2,000 to 2,750.
The texts are taken from magazines, books and newspapers.
Some questions are placed before the text, other after, depending on the nature of the question.

3. Written expression:
The IELTS written expression test lasts 60 minutes. You will be asked to write two texts about a given subject: the first must be a minimum of 150 words in length (advised time: 20 minutes) and the second must be at least 250 words long (advised time: about 40 minutes).

4. Speaking:
The IELTS speaking test consists of a 15-minute individual interview with a Cambridge examiner.
